What Does Matrixectomy Cost?

That figure is genuinely all-inclusive: the consultation, the local anaesthetic, the procedure itself, all dressings and materials, and two follow-up appointments while the toe heals. There is nothing to add at the end.
Short-notice emergency surgery, for patients who need to be seen the same day, is £500 with identical inclusions. Any additional toe treated at the same appointment is half price.
Across London, private clinics typically charge from around £350 to £750 for the same procedure — and at some clinics the consultation and follow-ups are billed separately, so compare the total, not the headline.
If you have private medical insurance, check your policy: Anna is BUPA Fee Assured, and Aviva, Vitality and other insurers are also accepted. Many podiatry-inclusive policies will reimburse some or all of the fee.
Can You Get It Free on the NHS?
In principle, yes — nail surgery is an NHS procedure. In practice, access has tightened significantly. Many GP practices no longer refer routine ingrown toenails for NHS nail surgery at all, and where referral pathways exist, waiting lists commonly run to months. The threshold tends to require repeated infection or documented failed conservative treatment first.
That leaves many patients choosing between months of recurring pain and a one-hour private appointment within days. There is no right answer for everyone — if your case qualifies and you can comfortably wait, the NHS route costs nothing. If the toe is affecting your work, sport or sleep now, the arithmetic usually favours getting it fixed.

How Much Does It Hurt?
The honest answer, from hundreds of procedures: the worst part is a few seconds of stinging while the local anaesthetic goes in. After that the toe is completely numb, and patients routinely report the procedure itself as painless — many are surprised enough to say so out loud.
The toe stays numb for two to four hours after you leave. As sensation returns, expect a mild throbbing for the first 24–72 hours, which paracetamol normally controls comfortably. Most patients describe the post-surgery discomfort as far milder than the ingrown toenail itself.

How Long Is Recovery?
You walk out of the clinic immediately after the procedure — no crutches, no hospital stay.
The first 48 hours: keep the foot up where possible and keep the dressing dry. Most people with desk jobs are back at work within 24–48 hours; if your work involves heavy boots or being on your feet all day, allow a few days more.
The first fortnight: the toe is dressed and healing; you'll have a follow-up at the clinic (included in the fee) so healing can be checked and the dressing changed. Gentle walking is fine — running and swimming wait a little longer.
Full healing: the nail bed typically heals completely over six to eight weeks. Because the treated nail edge has been dealt with at the matrix, it does not grow back — which is the point of choosing matrixectomy over simply trimming or removing the nail.
